Interior Home Painting Tips

Painting the interior of your home helps set a mood and creates atmosphere.
If you paint over dirty, oily surfaces, the paint that you apply will easily chip or peel off. Before you paint anything, be sure to clean grimy areas with a deglosser or heavy-duty cleaner intended for pre-paint cleaning.
These products work well for cleaning painted, varnished or enameled surfaces, and they help improve the adhesion of the new paint. They’re also ideal for cleaning greasy or oily areas like your kitchen and bathroom walls, and for removing hand marks around light switches and doorknobs.
To use these cleaners, wipe the cleaner onto the surface in a circular motion using a lint-free cloth or abrasive pad (if the grime or dirt is bad).
Start at the bottom of the wall and work your way up with your cleaner. After the surface is clean, make sure you fill in any nicks and holes, and then sand them smooth before you paint.
The cleaners are available at your local home centers (Home Depot, Lowes, etc) or paint stores. Be sure to wear rubber gloves and eye protection when you’re using these, and keep them away from your children and pets.
